The Right Officer in the Right Assignment

After Premium Investigations’ comprehensive security officer training, most of our officers will have the same set of baseline skills to prepare them for security duty. However, each of these officers are still individuals who bring their strengths and vulnerabilities to the table. It’s then our job to assign each officer to the correct security posting.

Many security firms have a cookie-cutter approach to their guards. They assume that because everyone received the same training, everyone is equally suited for any assignment. If a firm doesn’t take the time to get to know their guards, they will likely assign some to the wrong types of postings which aren’t suited to their strengths. Guards will make mistakes; clients will be dissatisfied; guards will be rotated to a different position (again with little consideration for their strengths), or even fired; and the relationship between a security firm and their client will be damaged. Not only that, but morale amongst the other security officers will drop and both the security firm and the client will have to invest even more time to fill that position.

No one wins when a firm doesn’t try to match their security guard with the right type of post. That’s why P.I. puts our time, effort, and resources into learning about our employees and how they work best, especially when they could be in high-stress environments.

As part of P.I.’s Training Academy, we observe each of our security officers to understand what types of security posts they are best suited for. From perambulatory patrols, to front desk duties and fire watches, each of our posts have different requirements based on the facilities and the level of security required.

Once we get to know our officers, we know what types of roles are best for them to fulfill. Someone who is more active or needs to be moving is better suited for a walking patrol; someone with excellent interpersonal skills can fill a role with lots of interfacing with the public and the people they are protecting. Even the time of day can play a huge role in how alert a security officer is. Since every officer works together to create a safe, secure environment, it is important that we are able to match everyone to posts they will perform well in.

Our role does not end after the initial assignments are given, either. We continue to communicate with both our team and with the client. Open and honest communication gives insight to both the particulars of a client’s site as well as how the security officer is doing in a specific post. If any issues do come up, we can address them before they become bigger problems.

When the officer matches the post they are assigned, everyone wins. The client is happier, their facility is safer, and the security officer performs better, leading to less employee turnover and lower costs.
